Dr. J

Dr.J began his life-long love of music in 1985 when he purchased his first vinyl LP – a copy of Grandmaster Flash’s “They Said It Couldn’t Be Done”. After amassing a sizeable music library, he bought his first DJ mixer in 1991 and started experimenting with mixing and scratching with an array of make-shift equipment and remnants from his mother’s record collection. October of 1994 marked his first public appearance as a DJ and he hasn’t looked back since. From his humble start doing small funk parties in his hometown Regina, to his hosting duties at the legendary Lydia’s “Souled Out”(one of Canada’s longest running electronic music weeklies) he was able to make a name for himself as a respected DJ across North America. Dr.J currently
holds numerous DJ residencies in Saskatoon, hosts the long running “Expansions” radio show, and is a contributing music writer for Hot Stuff magazine in the Netherlands. One word sums up Dr.J – F.U.N.K.

Tubbman Junction

Tubbman Junction is a rich stew by the fire, or a cool drink on a warm summer day. Local & homegrown, natural & organic, wholesome, hearty, desirable, delicious, stick to your ribs kind of goodness. Join Ma Nettle and Uncle Fudd on a harmonious journey through life on the land with original classics and old alt country folk roots favorites.
Long ago and far away in a land before time & babies, Joule & Riley met on a weekend of shared gigs while her duo, Born Trouble, opened for Tim Hus, who Riley was playing bass with at the time. Life intervened and Joule hung up her guitar soon after as creative energy flowed in a different direction. After a dozen or so years of musical abstinence, just as Joule was dusting off old songs and working out her chops, Riley dropped in with an interesting offer of collaboration. With a shared reverence for the likes of John Prine, Gillian Welch & Emmylou Harris, they began their journey together, immediately performing at Eliza’s Barn Burner (2023) to rave reviews from a receptive audience. Not willing to let a seven hour commute get in the way of a good time, they got right to work on their repertoire. A few months later Tubbman Junction was born, and festival appearances at Ness Creek, Doylefest and Northern Lights Bluegrass & Old Tyme Music Festival were confirmed.
The duo is known for digging into your deep feelings like digging into the dusty old trunk where songs have been stored for a decade, bringing tears on the heels of smiles and healing hearts with a soul connection that can only be described as electric, acoustically. “We are planning for studio time with some local talents over the winter so we have something lasting you can take home when we can’t be together,” shares Joule. From fundraisers and intimate kitchen parties to festivals and campfire stages, Tubbman Junction is all the places we meet.

2023 was a big year for Drew, releasing his first three original singles: ‘Minivan’ ‘Here to Party’ and ‘This is my Life’, as well as recording a music video for Here to Party. The Great Fuss

One of Saskatoon’s premier original bands, The Great Fuss, have steadily built a reputation for their emotive and energetic performances. Their visibly joyful approach to music has made them a desirable opening act for many internationally-acclaimed acts this year, including Steven Page of the Barenaked Ladies, Chris Murphy of Sloan, Five Alarm Funk and Wide Mouth Mason. With an homage to the pulsing piano melodies and indelible electric guitar riffs of classic pop-rock, this Saskatoon foursome go for a generational collision, capturing an old-school vibe within a contemporary kaleidoscope of rhythm, lyrics and low-fi pop rock riffs that earworm into your consciousness.

Cupid's Heart

Cupid’s Heart is a North Saskatchewan trio belting poetic and moody lyrics amidst cello, electric guitar, and drums. Described as Chrissie Hynde Pretenders vibes with a pinch of Nirvana, alternative rock fits them like a baggy sweater. An electrifying stage presence and grungy realness sets this Prince Albert band apart.

Jake and the Kid

Jake and the kid is a 4-piece alternative band from Regina. Formed in 2020 during the pandemic, the group has been working towards perfecting their music since then. The group won the SaskMusic album of the year award in 2023 for their EP “Baby Bro” as a 7-piece band, which contains lyrics involving adolescence and paints them over a canvas of lo-fi folk, indie, alternative, and shoegaze influences. Since then, the band has been working on reforming their lineup as a 4-person band and rethinking their approach to songwriting so their work can reach new heights. Now, Jake and the Kid is writing and performing works from their upcoming full-length album that falls into genres similar to their last EP, but adds new post-rock and experimental elements, as well as having a more refined sound. Essentially, as a whole work, their new album and live set seeks to evoke emotion and intrigue in listeners through different songs involving dynamic changes, varied track lengths, thick and thin textural changes, and sticky songwriting. The first single from the album “Juniper” is out on all platforms now and is indicative of what is to come from the band in the future.

Enderby

These four started their musically journey together after math homework and basketball practices jamming at one member’s dad’s reggae/dad rock/psychedelic/dad rock band jam space. After delving into the deepest, darkest corners of punk and ska and putting on shows for the rowdy locals, they decide to take things in another direction. Enderby leans more towards alt-country and indie rock, but still with an emphasis on doing most things DIY.

The Dirty Sanchez Orchestra

The current project from singer, guitarist and songwriter Barrett Prokopie (formerly of the Never Was, Top Secret Briefcase, Two Minute Hate), Dirty Sanchez Orchestra combines Prokopie’s adolescent admiration of seminal Saskatchewan punks Oswald’s Walking Connection with the influence of skate punk heavyweights such as Propagandi and No Use For A Name. Teen drummer Charlie Prokopie, raised from birth on a steady diet of pure punk rock, brings a hard hitting, ambitious complexity to his dad’s songs that bassist ‘Weird Uncle’ Will Yannacoulias deftly ties together. Formed in February 2023, Dirty Sanchez Orchestra have played bars, all ages shows and festivals in Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Regina and Nipawin with a long list of indie punk, hardcore, metal and alternative rock bands. Their 9 track debut album, recorded with Justin Bender/Divergent Sounds, is available on all streaming services now!
